Design-led Hotels That Earn Their Keep

The secret to the micro-break is the right base camp. You can’t afford any mediocrity when you only have 48 hours to make a memory, which means the hotel has to be more than just a place to sleep, it needs to be the destination itself. It needs to be a flawless bubble you can retreat to between high-impact explorations of the city.

These are three places I’ve meticulously researched (and plan to stay in the near future), each built for the demanding, design-led, two-night sprint.

Hotel Saint-André des Arts, Paris

Everyone goes to the Marais, which is lovely to hang out in (imo) but not my favourite place to stay. This hotel is in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, which still holds a gritty charm but without the crowds.

This place looks like a perfectly dressed film set for a 1970s drama, and the lobby looks exactly how I want my own flat to. The rooms are tiny (perfect for a solo escape or a close couple 👀) but the design is so rich in texture (velvet, brass, dark wood) that it looks like a jewel box, not a cramped space.

The hidden value here is the total immersion - you step out and you’re immediately in the world of high-brow French caffeine and vintage bookshops. No time wasted on travel, just straight to the main event.

Hotel Peter & Paul, New Orleans, USA

Yes, it requires a longer flight, but perfect as an add-on to a US road trip.

It’s a former Catholic church, convent, schoolhouse, and rectory, and it rejects the entire concept of the traditional, fussy five-star experience.

The design is spectacular - think plaster walls, antique religious iconography, and furniture that looks genuinely collected, not bought off a catalogue. But the real reason it works for a short stay is the location in the Faubourg Marigny. You get the real NOLA atmosphere without being stuck in the drunken chaos of the French Quarter, meaning your 48 hours are spent tasting incredible food and listening to proper music, not queuing for beads.

It’s the perfect mix of culture and quiet glamour, allowing you to bypass the tourist fluff entirely.

The Audo, Copenhagen, Denmark

If your home life is looking a bit messy and you need a swift injection of visual calm, this is your spiritual cleanser.

Located in the Nordhavn district, this is a hotel, office, restaurant, and showroom wrapped up in one magnificent, minimal piece of architecture.

Every single item (from the coffee table to the bedside lamp) is a perfect piece of Danish design. The rooms are like living in an expertly curated Kinfolk magazine.

It functions like a design masterclass where you leave ready to completely empty your drawers and rethink your entire living space. It’s a two-day life admin reset dressed up as a hotel stay.

We're always on the lookout for new places to stay, design-led Instagram accounts to follow and generally things to upscale day-to-day life - so please drop us a message.
